La comida empieza a escasear en la zona, la violencia va a la alza y el más mínimo movimiento desatará la guerra inminente. Pese a esto, Conrad, un hombre de campo, está dispuesto a sobreponerse a todo con tal de conquistar la mano de la bella Susanne, su querida amiga de la infancia. Ella, no comparte su sentir y no se ve viviendo en el campo toda su vida.

Todo cambia cuando el agreste león, Ébano, hambriento y agotado, es atrapado robando cosechas para comer.  Su castigo es común y letal, la muerte.
